This web site documents the activities of Véhicule Art (Montréal) Inc.
The history of Véhicule is an interesting and important one. It was the first artist-run gallery in Montréal, and the second in all of Canada. It was a dynamic hub for the visual arts and allied arts activities.
The Concordia University Archives has been acquiring documentation on the visual arts in Montréal since 1983. The first materials acquired were those of Véhicule Art. The archival documents have been organized and have been actively used for research and for the preparation of an exhibition on Véhicule in the Concordia Art Gallery (now the Leonard and Bina Ellen Gallery). Additional materials have been acquired, oral histories have been done, and further research continues.
This web site attempts to present all the facets of this important center of the arts in the 1970s and it includes:
- The listing (finding aid) of the Concordia University Archives holdings on Véhicule Art (Montréal) Inc.
- A chronology of exhibitions and other events which took place at Véhicule
- A selection of original documents/images from Véhicule
We hope this web site will serve as a catalyst for ongoing study, dialogue, and debate about the history of Montréal art, internationalism, the concept of avantgardism in Québec, and the defining of contemporary art in Canada in the 1970s, and early 1980s. It can serve as a focal point for people who wish to learn about what happened at Montréals first artist-run gallery, for those who want to share what they have learned, and those who are asking questions.
We're interested in how you are using the site and what you would like to see included in it. As more funding becomes available we will add to the site. Let us know what you think!
