US-2003-4-D34 Amendment to article 24 of the Code of Conduct (Academic)

1.                 Call to order

Dr. O’Brien called the meeting to order at 2:55 p.m.

2.                 Approval of the Agenda

R-2003-4-6 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Cormier, Sacca), it was unanimously resolved that the agenda be approved as submitted.

3.                 Approval of the Minutes of the Open Session meeting held May 9, 2003

In item 10 of the Minutes, Mr. Slater asked that the specific dates mentioned by Dr. Lowy with respect to Mr. Serhal’s registration to a continuing education course and receipt of the letter banning him be stated.

R-2003-4-7 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Tremblay, Slater), it was unanimously resolved that the Minutes of the Open Session meeting of May 9, 2003 be approved, as amended.

4.                 Business arising from the Minutes

There was no business arising from the Minutes.

5.                 Report from the Academic Programs Committee

The Provost thanked all the members of the Academic Programs Committee for their work during the past academic year, and in particular, Dr. Catherine Bolton and Ms. Francie Beresford, the Committee’s Vice-Chair and Secretary, respectively.

5.1               Major undergraduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science

R-2003-4-8 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Esmail, Stathopoulos), it was unanimously resolved that the major undergraduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D4 and D5, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.2               Major undergraduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Fine Arts

R-2003-4-9 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Jackson, Panet-Raymond), it was unanimously resolved that the major undergraduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Fine Arts, as set out in Document US-2003-4-D6, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.3               Major undergraduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Arts and Science

R-2003-4-10 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Singer, Grant), it was unanimously resolved that the major undergraduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Arts and Science, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D7 to D12, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.4               Major undergraduate curriculum changes –John Molson School of Business

R-2003-4-11 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Tomberlin, Morin), it was unanimously resolved that the major undergraduate curriculum changes in the John Molson School of Business, as set out in Document US-2003-4-D13, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.5               Minor undergraduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Arts and Science
5.6               Minor undergraduate curriculum changes – Faculties of Arts and Science and Fine Arts

The Speaker reminded Senators that minor curriculum hanges are conveyed for information purposes only.

5.7               Major graduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Arts and Science

R-2003-4-12 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Sacca, Singer), it was unanimously resolved that the major graduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Arts and Science, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D19 to D21, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.8               Major graduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Fine Arts

R-2003-4-13 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Sacca, Virk), it was unanimously resolved that the major graduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Fine Arts, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D22 and D23, as revised, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.9               Major graduate curriculum changes – Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science

R-2003-4-14 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Sacca, Esmail), it was unanimously resolved that the major graduate curriculum changes in the Faculty of Fine Arts, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D24 and D25, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

5.10              Major graduate curriculum changes – John Molson School of Business

R-2003-4-15 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Sacca, Tombelin), it was unanimously resolved that the major graduate curriculum changes in the John Molson School of Business, as set out in Documents US-2003-4-D26 to D33, as revised, be approved, as recommended by the Academic Programs Committee in Document US-2003-4-D3.

6.                 Amendment to article 24 of the Code of Conduct (Academic)

R-2003-4-16 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Lee, Slater), it was unanimously resolved article 24 of the Code of Conduct (Academic) be amended add reference to the CSU Advocacy Center, as set out in Document US-2003-4-D34 (revised).

7.                 Remarks from the Rector

Dr. Lowy conveyed his appreciation to those Senators whose terms are concluding and thanked all Senators for their contribution during to Senate during the 2002-2003 academic year.

8.                 Items for information

Mr. Slater updated Senate on the proceedings in connection with the Hillel lawsuit against the CSU.

Mr. Lee introduced Ms. Vi Hoang, the CSU Vice-President, Academic as of June 1.

9.                 Question period

There were no questions.

10.               Election of the Speaker of Senate

Before he left the room, several Senators expressed their respect and appreciation to Dr. O’Brien for the manner in which he chaired Senate meetings.

Dr. Lowy took over as Speaker. He confirmed that a call for nominations for a Speaker of Senate was done in accordance with the enabling legislation adopted by Senate in 1996. However, no nominations were received. Steering Steering Committee has nominated the incumbent, Dr. John O’Brien.

R-2003-4-17 Upon motion duly moved and seconded (Lowy, Stathopoulos), it was unanimously resolved that Dr. John O’Brien be acclaimed Speaker of Senate for the 2003-2004 academic year; and
  That Senate express its appreciation to Dr. O’Brien for his masterful chairmanship of Senate during the past year as well as his willingness to continue as Speaker.

11.               Other business

There was no other business to bring before Senate.

12.               Next meeting

The next meeting of Senate will be held on Friday, September 12, 2003.

13.               Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 3:15p.m., on a motion moved by Prof. Bayne and seconded by Prof. Jacobs.
